What exactly does the FitSteps program do?
The program will educate you on the benefits of exercise, help you incorporate physical activity into your daily routine, and transition into a healthy and active lifestyle during and following treatment.
What if my cancer is advanced, or I'm not in good physical condition-will I be accepted into the FitSteps program?
We have created and adapted the FitSteps program so that ALL cancer patients, regardless of diagnosis, stage of treatment, or degree of disability can experience the proven benefits of exercise.
What does the program cost?
FitSteps is FREE to all cancer patients for their lifetime. Unlimited exercise sessions for unlimited duration will enable you achieve maximum benefits from the program.
How do I start?
Once your physician sends your referral to FitSteps, we will contact you by phone to schedule your first visit.
What should I expect at my first visit?
An exercise specialist will perform a baseline evaluation including a thorough discussion of medical history, exercise history, personal goals, and current fitness level. An examination will be done to identify areas of strength and weakness which allows us to create an exercise prescription tailored specifically to YOU and your needs.
What should I wear to my first visit?
Since we will be assessing your current level of physical ability, you should wear comfortable clothes and shoes for exercising.
What should I bring to my first visit?
You should also bring along your up to date medication list and water.
What if I am really out of shape?
Don’t worry about your current fitness level-we will meet you where you are and set attainable goals to get you where you want to be.
What kind of activities do the exercise prescriptions include?
Depending on your current fitness level, mobility, and goals, your tailored workout can include any of the following: aerobic exercise, strength training, core and balance training, and flexibility/stretching.
What instruction will I get from my trainer on these activities?
You will be guided on proper form, intensity, and repetitions of exercises-all based on your individual condition.
How do I know the workout level is safe for me?
We measure your blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation prior to exercise and then constantly monitor them throughout the session.
Do I need any equipment for the workout sessions?
Your FitSteps exercise center has all of the resources required for your workouts.
Can I do any of my workouts from home?
Many of the program components can be adapted to perform at home. To enhance exercise activities in the home, some of the resources at the FitSteps facility are available for purchase-such as stretch bands, pedometers, stability balls and FitBalls.
Will I have any instructions for exercises to do at home?
Detailed handouts for performing specific exercises will be provided or you may purchase the FitSteps exercise and nutrition manual, “Your Journey: Achieving Health and Happiness”.
